It’s hard to say succinctly what Beloit Public Library provides to the Greater Beloit Community other than … exactly what it needs. With 43,902 registered cardholders, there is no doubt, the Greater Beloit Community appreciates having access to the more than 2.1 million books, audiobooks, music, movies, and other items available to them at Beloit Public Library and through the SHARE Consortium.
But the community’s needs go beyond materials. And the needs of each of the more than 400 people who enter the doors every day at Beloit Public Library is varied. Day after day, week after week, and year after year, the Library and staff continue to pivot, adapt, and innovate to answer the calls of its community members.
When Cameron* was suddenly excited he could read and wanted to find picture books he could read to his dad, BPL answered by finding him rows and rows of books about his favorite topic –trucks.
When Star* was unemployed and looking for job opportunities, BPL answered by connecting her with job services staff from the Department of Workforce Development who hold regular hours in our computer lab.
When staff reported fielding numerous phone calls from community members during the pandemic asking for help to deal with loneliness and depression, BPL answered by adding light therapy lamps and Buddha Boards to its Library of Things Collection.
When Miguel* wanted to learn English, BPL answered by connecting him with ESL services provided on site through Stateline Literacy Council.
When Lindsey* wanted to earn her GED so she could start her associates degree in phlebotomy, BPL answered by partnering with Blackhawk Technical College to ensure it had an affordable location to serve Beloit residents wanting to continue their education.
When Maxine* needed a way to give her husband who was experiencing early signs of dementia an outlet while also finding a support group for herself, BPL answered by connecting her with the Memory Café program held monthly at the library.
When Jamion* called from out of state asking for help to solve a mystery regarding his family’s history, BPL answered by locating old articles and obituaries that helped fill in gaps that had long been in his loved one’s life story.
When Maria* wanted a safe and comfortable place where her toddler could learn social skills and have fun without spending her hard-earned income, BPL answered by providing early literacy programming five days a week in addition to learning-based play centers.
When PBS KIDS needed a partner to deliver early literacy and unique learning opportunities to children from disadvantaged backgrounds, BPL answered by not only providing the space to meet but becoming a lead organization in a literacy movement that is reaching far and wide.
The needs of our community are diverse, and their calls for help never cease. Each time they call, Beloit Public Library answers. Because of generous funding from the Library Foundation – and donors like you – BPL is able to pivot, adapt, and innovate with new programs, initiatives, and solutions to help fill the varied needs of our neighbors
