Beloit Public Library will host “The Affordable City: A Presentation by Shane Phillips” from 12-1:15 p.m. Friday, May 8, at Beloit Public Library, 605 Eclipse Blvd. This free public program is part of the library’s ongoing The Civics Academy series.
Phillips, author of The Affordable City: Strategies for Putting Housing Within Reach (and Keeping it There) and housing policy expert from UCLA’s Lewis Center for Regional Policy Studies and a housing policy expert from UCLA’s Lewis Center for Regional Policy Studies, will share insights on one of the region’s most pressing challenges: housing affordability. His presentation will focus on why there is no single solution to housing affordability and why meaningful progress requires a holistic approach sustained over many years in collaboration with many partners.
Phillips will present a framework for affordability based on three priorities: Supply, Stability, and Subsidy. He will also discuss proven policy solutions, the factors driving affordability challenges, and reasons to be optimistic that change is possible.
“Housing affordability affects families, employers, neighborhoods, and the long-term health of our community,” said Beloit Public Library Director Nick Dimassis. “We are pleased to bring this conversation to Beloit Public Library as part of The Civics Academy and to provide a space where residents can learn, ask questions, and better understand the policies and partnerships that shape housing in our region.”
Beloit Public Library’s Civics Academy programs are designed to help community members better understand public issues, civic systems, and opportunities for engagement. It is sponsored by Beloit Public Library Foundation and Stateline Community Foundation.
The program is free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to bring a lunch or be one of the first 25 to register to receive a free lunch.
