Beloit Public Library invites the community to an afternoon with local author John Graf as he explores a fascinating “what if” in baseball history through his book, Simulating Satchel: A What-If History of Integrated Major League Baseball in 1934.
The event, “Simulating Satchel: A Baseball What If…?”, will take place from 1:00-3:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 2 at the library.
Graf’s book presents a multi-dimensional simulation, described as a “Utopian Baseball Fantasy,” imagining what might have happened if Hall of Fame pitcher Satchel Paige and nearly 100 of his Negro Leagues contemporaries had been allowed to join the American and National leagues before the 1934 season.
During the program, Graf will present a slideshow on the origins of the book project and the research behind it. His presentation will also highlight local Beloit connections, including Satchel Paige’s ties to Beloit through his barnstorming days and local family connections to players from the Negro Leagues.
The afternoon will include time to meet the author, enjoy refreshments, and purchase signed copies of the book. This free event is a great opportunity for baseball fans, history lovers, and anyone interested in exploring the intersections of sports, race, and local history.
