There are a lot of resources out there creating and posting virtual story time content and distributing it via Facebook. This is actually a big deal because normally publishers and authors prohibit these kinds of activities due to copyright protections. Since our current pandemic is unique, many publishers have relaxed these protections and given permission for outside groups to participate in this kind of activity. Many of these story times are being hosted “live” as a way to manage copyright issues, while others are being posted with the promise of removing them after a month or two. Others are being hosted by the authors themselves. Either way, we are happy to share some with you!

Storyline Online
The Screen Actors Guild Foundation hosts this one, and it’s actually nothing new or unique to the coronavirus pandemic. This award-winning children’s literacy website streams videos featuring celebrated actors reading children’s books alongside creatively produced illustrations. Readers include Viola Davis, Chris Pine, Lily Tomlin, Kevin Costner, Annette Bening, James Earl Jones, Betty White, and more!

Brooklyn Public Library Family
This is the family page for Brooklyn Public Library (another BPL!) that hosts daily story times at 10:00 a.m. Central Standard Time.

Dan Gutman
Best-selling author Dan Gutman is known for his My Weird School books. He has been reading almost daily live on his Facebook page. Tune in at 1:00 p.m. Central Standard Time.

Jarrett J. Krosoczka
Best-selling children’s book author/illustrator Jarrett J. Krosoczka has written and illustrated such books as Max for PresidentLunch Lady graphic novels, Platypus Police Squad novels, and the Jedi Academy series. He is hosting live webcasts every weekday at 1:00 p.m. Central Standard Time.

Narwhal and Jelly
Author/illustrator Ben Clanton of Narwhal and Jelly fame has hosted draw-and-talk events live on Facebook, which now are archived. He has since switched over to Instagram and is hosting more events each week. Watch them whenever it’s convenient, or catch him live on Mondays at 11:30 a.m. Central Standard Time.

Penguin Kids
Publisher Penguin House is hosting story times with favorite authors and celebrities every day at 2:00 p.m. Central Standard Time via their Facebook page.

Verona Public Library
Verona Public Library is hosting virtual story time via their Facebook page at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesdays.

Mo Willems
Catch Lunch Doodles with Mo Willems (illustrator of Don’t let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! and Knuffle Bunny) every day at 12:00 p.m. Central Standard Time. Activity sheets are included for those with at-home printers.
